How to Make Cheese

Although making homemade cheese is not as common anymore, some people still prefer to make it that way. If you are tired of buying from stores and are trying to go organic or just want to taste the difference, you’ll be pleased to know that it is not as difficult as it seems. Follow the steps below to learn how to make cheese.

Here are the ingredients and materials you’ll need:
-Thermometer, reading from 0 to 225 F
-Colander
-2 stainless steel pots
-Cheese cloths
-1 fl oz diluted rennet
-1/2 cup cool water
-1 ¼ gallons whole milk
-Non Iodized salt
-1/2 cultured buttermilk
-Spices and herbs (any for your unique taste)

1. Pour the whole milk into the pot and warm on stove until it has reached 80 degrees F. Use the thermometer to ensure the milk is at the right temperature.
2. Add in the diluted rennet solution and buttermilk. This is important as these are all the main ingredients needed to create the cheese.
3. Stir the mixture and cover the pot with a lid. Be sure that everything is combined and in the texture is consistent.
4. Allow the mixture to set for 8 to 12 hours in room temperature. You will begin to notice the milk will change textures and begin appearing like soft, thick cheese.
5. Pour cheese mixture into another cloth-lined pot and set for 6 to 8 hours. The liquid will drain out of the bottom and create a thick consistency.
6. Combine any spices, herbs and salt after the cheese has drained and then you’re finished. The amount to add is based on your own preferences.
