Recipe Review: Sticky Ginger Fried Rice Sunny-Side Up

For some reason, when it comes to white rice I just won’t order or eat it unless it’s my mom’s. There’s a whole background to the way chinese rice is cooked to make it taste like comfort food with just the right amount of stickiness and bite. However, when it comes to left-overs, it’s even better and I’m more likely to eat it for fried rice dishes. Some of my favorite fried rice dishes are super simple, with just a few additional ingredients thrown in – some of my favorite are green onions, ginger, scrambled eggs and bean sprouts, all tossed around with a bit of sesame oil, soy sauce and grapeseed oil. Here’s a recipe by Mark Bittman that caught my tastebuds – obviously because of the ginger, yummy egg yolk, and basically all of it. Try it out, save the leftovers, it will still be super yummy but [...]

1st 8th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational – Downtown Los Angeles, CA

I think I’m the last person to know that grilled cheese sandwiches will be flooding Downtown LA this Saturday, all thanks to the 1st 8th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational. This cheese grilling competition and festival is handing out tons of yummy grilled cheese samples to be devoured and judged for the People’s Choice Awards. Do you realize how insane this event will be? We are talking about one of the best things in the world to eat! My all-time favorite, the grilled cheese sandwich. There will be 300 competitors grilling for this year’s Grilled Cheese Champion spot, 250 amateur and 50 professional. They’ll be grilling up sammiches within 50 minutes for the 3 categories: Missionary (standard bread, cheese(s), butter and nothing else), Kama Sutra (any kind of bread, butter, cheese (must be a minimum 60%) plus additional ingredients), and Honey Pot (any kind of bread, butter, cheese (must be a [...]

ad hoc restaurant – for temporary relief from hunger – Yountville, CA

It’s not even April and I’ve already had the most amazing dining experience for the year. Seriously, I don’t see how the rest of the year can compare to my recent surprise brunch at Thomas Keller’s newest dining diggs in Yountville – ad hoc. Not only was it my very first experience in the Napa Valley, but it was my first stop! This place is super casual and such a friendly easy-going staff. The set menu changes daily and no matter what your food preferences and expectations are – you will be blown away with each bite. My brunch was the following – raspberry sangria, Raspberry Walnut Milkshake (see pic below), Lemon Polenta Muffin, Toad in a Hole with poached eggs, buttered crispy toasts, wild mushroom, spinach, and local smoked ham, and for dessert – pineapple crepe with ricotta. Our waitress Katie was the best ever, she was so nice [...]

M Cafe – West Hollywood, CA

What’s left when there’s no refined sugars, eggs, dairy, red meat or poultry? As bizarre as this probably sounds to most diners, there’s still a long list of other ingredients and intensely flavorful dishes to eat without these overused 5. I really think that we are so used to automatically reaching for these items without thinking about it and forget all the other great things to eat that are better and more delicious. Break the rut, open your eyes and expand your taste buds to a more interesting and diverse world of eating. The easiest and very motivating way to start is by heading over to M Cafe, the contemporary macrobiotic cuisine cafe with a global menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and more. Their kitchen uses wholesome, ecological ingredients like heirloom-varietal whole grains, organically grown beans, fresh fish and locally-grown fruits and vegetables. See below for menu items and [...]

Recipe Review: Soba Noodle Soup with Shiitake and Spinach

Here’s another childhood favorite soba dish that is incredibly simple to make. Martha Shulman’s Soba Noodle Soup with Shiitake and Spinach utilizes every cooking step towards a savory and complex broth to serve. The winning ingredients for me are the buckwheat soba noodles and plenty of scallions with maybe a few dashes of Ichimi Togarashi for a little more heat. This dish is undeniably healthy with the shiitake mushrooms, buckwheat soba, and spinach – even better is that it’s something I’ve always loved as a fast lunch or even late night comfort food. Recipe: by Martha Rose Shulman Yield: 4 Servings Time: Total 1 hour 15 minutes Ingredients: 1 ounce kombu seaweed 4 dried shiitake mushrooms 3/4 pound dried soba noodles 12 ounces spinach, stemmed and washed thoroughly, or 1 6-ounce bag baby spinach, rinsed 2 green onions, chopped 1 tablespoon sake 2 tablespoons mirin 2 to 4 tablespoons low-sodium [...]

Piccolo Ristorante – Venice, CA

I had one of the most delicious romantic dinners the other night at Piccolo Ristorante in Venice Beach. This cozy little Italian haven is in an unassuming spot right off the beach, tucked into the neighborhood. The place was busy before it was even open. The proprietor, Vittorio Viotti, made sure we had a perfectly comfy corner table in one of their dining room wings. Everything from the room, seating and considerate attention to the bread basket, Branzino Marinato (top pic) and Doppio Raviolo di Pesce Halibut (pic below), was as blissful as you would ever want a dinner to be. This is definitely a new favorite restaurant for me. Check out some of their menu items below. (Doppio Raviolo di Pesce – Spigola, Halibut, and Eggplant with Mascarpone and Caviar) Chef Bobo’s seasonal menu: ANTIPASTI CALDI Quaglia Arrosto – pan-roasted quail, stuffed with foie grás, Marsala reduction $17 Ricotta [...]

Market Restaurant at the Cooper Building – Downtown Los Angeles

There’s a new breakfast/lunch spot in Downtown L.A. where you can get the best molasses cookies around along with other fresh and hot items. Bret Thompson of MILK in Hollywood partnered up with Pablo Ramirez and opened up Market Restaurant at the Cooper Building in the Fashion District. The catering menu is impressive as well as a promising 30 minute delivery service. Other than their molasses cookies, some of my favorite dishes to try are the Feta-terranean Salad with romaine hearts, cucumber, tomatoes, feta cheese, black olives, pita chips, garbanzo beans and lemon vinaigrette, the Vanilla Bean Rice Pudding with fresh fruit and granola, and Turkey Burger with cheddar cheese, vine ripened tomato, green leaf lettuce, pickles and secret sauce. See below for more menu items. Here is more info from Market Restaurant: Chef/Partner Bret Thompson (co-founder of MILK in Hollywood) and Partner Pablo Ramirez opened Market Restaurant at the [...]
