An Introduction To A Healthier Life – Part 4

In our last segment we talked about water, meals, desserts, and dieting. In our fourth and final segment we give you a suggestion for your daily meals, which we hope will help, especially if you are working and have limited time to prepare them. The best thing to do is prepare your working week meals during the weekend and keep them in the refrigerator. That way all you need to do is heat your meal up in the microwave for it to be ready. Prepare the ingredients below for the number of your weekly working days, For instance if you work 5 days a week, prepare them for five meals. Cook rice, pasta, potatoes, or any other non-refined carbohydrates, and leave it in a closed container. Grilled fish, chicken, turkey or meat and keep them in closed plastic boxes as well. Take 10 medium, or 8 big size tomatoes, peel [...]

An Introduction To A Healthier Life – Part 3

In our last segment, we talked about the sources of calories your body needs. As far as the water is concerned, I have always heard that you must drink at least 10 glasses of water each day, and that it’s not good to drink water when we eat because it will dilute the digestive juices. I’ve been trying to drink more water than I’m used to every day with no success, and I have always been drinking water with my meals because I need to drink. In my opinion there is no need to force yourself to drink water than you feel like you need to, the body is such an amazing machine that it functions marvelously by itself. The same way that it tells us that we need food by making us feel hungry, it also lets us know when we need water by making us feel thirsty. Of [...]

An Introduction To A Healthier Life – Part 2

In our first segment, we talked about the basics of nutrition. Today we’re going to continue our discussion by talking about the sources of calories your body needs. As you know, the body needs calories to burn in order for its organs and limbs to be able to function, the same way a car engine needs gas to run. These calories can come from carbohydrates (sugars) and fat. Refined carbohydrates like sugar are absorbed quickly by the body and stimulate hunger. It is therefore advisable to avoid as much as possible all sorts of refined sugars like desserts, ice cream, etc. Non refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, seeds, grains, peas, beans etc are absorbed slowly by the body and burned in order to provide energy. The other source of energy are fats. Plant fats, and animal fats. Try to consume as few animal fats as possible, these are [...]

An Introduction To A Healthier Life – Part 1

[Editor's Note: First I would like to introduce our new writer, Georges, who will be discussing everything related to healthy living. As an introduction to this new section of Daemon's Food, we will publish a four part introduction to a healthier life article that we hope you will enjoy.] When I was 41 I started to have back pain and decided to go and see a physiotherapist. After couple of sessions, he told me “You know your back problems are due to your back muscles, they are not strong enough, you need to reinforce them.” So the first thing I did was to enroll in a gym and started to weight training. I bought a complete collection of weigh training tapes, subscribed to a fitness magazine, and read many books on the subject. What I came to know was that the most important part of a weigh training program is [...]

1st 8th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational – Downtown Los Angeles, CA

I think I’m the last person to know that grilled cheese sandwiches will be flooding Downtown LA this Saturday, all thanks to the 1st 8th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational. This cheese grilling competition and festival is handing out tons of yummy grilled cheese samples to be devoured and judged for the People’s Choice Awards. Do you realize how insane this event will be? We are talking about one of the best things in the world to eat! My all-time favorite, the grilled cheese sandwich. There will be 300 competitors grilling for this year’s Grilled Cheese Champion spot, 250 amateur and 50 professional. They’ll be grilling up sammiches within 50 minutes for the 3 categories: Missionary (standard bread, cheese(s), butter and nothing else), Kama Sutra (any kind of bread, butter, cheese (must be a minimum 60%) plus additional ingredients), and Honey Pot (any kind of bread, butter, cheese (must be a [...]

ad hoc restaurant – for temporary relief from hunger – Yountville, CA

It’s not even April and I’ve already had the most amazing dining experience for the year. Seriously, I don’t see how the rest of the year can compare to my recent surprise brunch at Thomas Keller’s newest dining diggs in Yountville – ad hoc. Not only was it my very first experience in the Napa Valley, but it was my first stop! This place is super casual and such a friendly easy-going staff. The set menu changes daily and no matter what your food preferences and expectations are – you will be blown away with each bite. My brunch was the following – raspberry sangria, Raspberry Walnut Milkshake (see pic below), Lemon Polenta Muffin, Toad in a Hole with poached eggs, buttered crispy toasts, wild mushroom, spinach, and local smoked ham, and for dessert – pineapple crepe with ricotta. Our waitress Katie was the best ever, she was so nice [...]

M Cafe – West Hollywood, CA

What’s left when there’s no refined sugars, eggs, dairy, red meat or poultry? As bizarre as this probably sounds to most diners, there’s still a long list of other ingredients and intensely flavorful dishes to eat without these overused 5. I really think that we are so used to automatically reaching for these items without thinking about it and forget all the other great things to eat that are better and more delicious. Break the rut, open your eyes and expand your taste buds to a more interesting and diverse world of eating. The easiest and very motivating way to start is by heading over to M Cafe, the contemporary macrobiotic cuisine cafe with a global menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and more. Their kitchen uses wholesome, ecological ingredients like heirloom-varietal whole grains, organically grown beans, fresh fish and locally-grown fruits and vegetables. See below for menu items and [...]
