Restaurant Review: The Hungry Cat – Hollywood, CA

Here’s another perfect spot for dinner after movies at Arclight Hollywood. The Hungry Cat is just across the street behind Borders, tucked away from the noisy street. The place is sleek and modern but low-key with a nice outdoor seating area perfect for a first date or catching up with good friends. Their kitchen serves up seriously fresh seafood and a menu reflecting the culinary genius of a David Lentz and Suzanne Goin partnership. I had no doubt the food would be good but was still blown away by the incredibly flavors of even the most simplest items on the menu – Heirloom tomatoes, burrata and arugula salad with grilled bread (top pic) and steamed king crab leg with grilled toast (pic below). Here are some of items from their recent dinner menu: oysters on the half shell $2.25/ each little neck clams on the half shell $2.00/ each peel [...]

Restaurant Review: Paia Fish Market – Paia, Maui

I think the fastest I ever inhaled an entire grilled fillet of Ono was at Paia Fish Market in Maui. I sat down with my Grilled Ono Platter (top pic), took one bite, and then it all disappeared before I took my second breath – at least it seemed that way. It literally melted in my mouth, it was so unbelievably delicious. This was the best charbroiled fish I’ve ever had. The fish itself was so incredibly fresh, it didn’t need anything but a little bit of salt & pepper. You can find the freshest fish possible here. Their menu covers any which way you’d like your fish cooked or seasoned. If fish isn’t your thing, there are other options for meaters and veggies too – pastas, quesadillas, fajitas. The place is super casual with rows of communal benches in a wide open room. It’s the perfect spot after a [...]

Restaurant Review: Mama’s Fish House – Paia, Maui

I just came back from the best Hawaii trip to Maui and have so much to share. It’s going to take at least 5 days of non-stop writing to finish everything. So the first thing I did, before I even got to Maui, was to make reservations at Mama’s Fish House in Paia. It’s that good. You know how there are certain sights and experiences for every destination, that’s what this restaurant is for Maui. You haven’t fully experienced Maui until you’ve dined at Mama’s Fish House. I’ve only been to Maui once before and my dinner at Mama’s was one of my favorite memories. This second time around, it was even better than I thought possible. It’s impressive that this place has been around since the early 70′s. The food, service, location, and atmosphere is impossibly perfect. If it wasn’t so darn $$$$, I’d dine there more than just [...]

Restaurant Review: Kim Tar Seafood Restaurant – Monterey Park, CA

Last weekend was a rare occasion where my entire immediate family was in town. My parents flew in from overseas, my sister recently moved down to L.A. with my other sister, and my brother took a weekend break from college. Whenever we’re all together, it’s traditional for us to gather at a Chinese restaurant for a multi-course meal over several hours. Then we head back to the house for continued feasting over tea and dessert. Since my uncle was the oldest family member present, he was our host for dinner and picked Kim Tar Seafood Restaurant for our reunion. Whenever I’m dining with my family or anyone that I care about, it automatically makes the entire meal enjoyable and every dish more special. My uncle picked special dishes that he knew were our favorite ones and we had a wonderful dinner. The seafood was incredibly fresh and served in generous [...]

Recipe: Roasted Shrimp Salad with Tomatoes and Olives

Here’s a dish that looks beautiful with ingredients to impress and also easy to make. This recipe for Roasted Shrimp Salad with Tomatoes and Olives can be used for open-faced sandwiches or canapes. The tomatoes and olives is a favorite combination of mine. Whenever I see this, I automatically know I’m going to love the dish. The flavors are totally satisfying and refreshing. It gives the dish intense flavor without any weight. Another thing I love about this recipe, is that it doesn’t use any mayo as most do. I can’t remember the last time I used mayo. I just don’t think it’s the most flavorful option for any salad, sandwich dressing or even on toast and there are so many other better ingredients to use. When I taste the mayo alone, there’s hardly any yum factor and really not worth whatever amount of calories it has. I think this [...]
